Be the Change you wish to see in the world
Hypocrisy is not something that sits well me with. Those that say, "Do what as I say, not as I do." have failed to get my respect.
We are not in short supply of those quick to dish out advice, the same advice that they don't action themselves. I don't want to be one of those people. I want to be the change I want to see in the world. I want to lead by example, by my actions not by my words.
Its an ambitious ask, lucky for me ambition is something I thrive on. So this is what I have done to Walk to the Talk with Sharon Robinson Studio.
Planet
I have chosen to use sustainably grown timber as much as possible and also chosen to purchase it from family-run small local businesses (by local I mean local to New Zealand)
I have chosen to use recycled cardboard from a local family-run company for my packaging and cut in all my pieces into the sheets so that they arrive safe in 100% currently recyclable packaging. So often we are told something is recyclable when in fact it could be, but the available systems don't support it, so it ends up in landfill dispute the sales pitch.
People
I support local small businesses for all the aspects of production I need support and help with. I had the option of outsourcing to China, it would have made my profit margins bigger and it would also have meant bigger production lines, but I said no. It has been the harder road, but the right one.
I also use people who are like-minded and are on the same page as me. Its a joy to do business with people I believe in and enjoy supporting.
Passion
I believe in my work. I love it. And I believe in the people who collaborate with me, support me, and are supported by me. There is magic in the twinkle of our eyes when we love what we do, and do what we love.
These are all aspects I wish to see as a change in the world. A place where all business is focused on being kind to the planet, kind to people and that embraces the joy that makes life simply worthwhile.
